As to how Authentic and Nature Loving this resort is and speaks sweet music to any true Nature Lover if that after Mauli de Saram after having a successful and rewarding career for 20 years working for buying houses as a Merchandiser exporting garments to the USA and Europe took refuge in the wilderness of her beloved country Sri Lanka which was her calling.
Together with her good friend and architect Vijitha Basanayaka who suggested that they should find a land destroyed by man as a base for the project. This is contrary to the norm, where tourist ventures are built on picturesque sites. He firmly believes that we over consume everything that we use to the extent our planet cannot sustain it. As a practice he reuses building materials to the maximum. He designed according to materials available. Through hard work from the inception with many carpenters, masons dropping out; numerous times of despair with the BLESSINGS of Nature and the BLESSING of the Triple Gem the Galkadawala Forest Lodge came alive embracing Nature and the fauna and flora along with the animals, many species of birds living in the wilderness.
Quoting Mauli de Saram “Environmental organizations have asked me why I have not submitted Galkadawala for an award. I cannot do so. Galkadawala is based on the values instilled in us by our heritage, a proven way of life based on Buddhist teachings – live in moderation taking the middle path, not in excess, not too less. This is neither a concept, nor based on a rubric of some organization.
